Three’s The Block NZ gets off to a colourful start with showstopping Guest Bedrooms
This season of Three’s The Block NZ promises to be quite colourful if the first room reveal is anything to go by. The Guest Bedrooms revealed in last Sunday’s episode of the hit Three reality show featured striking Resene Wallpaper Collection 5223-2, a bold Resene Ayers Rock tongue and groove feature wall and an immersive Resene Waiouru painted bedroom – and the feedback from the judges was just as bright.
The stakes were high in Guest Bedroom week with $7,000 up for grabs as well as first pick of the houses. The first week on The Block NZ saw all four teams camped together in House 3 and House 4 completing Guest Bedrooms with the winning house’s combined score deciding who got highly coveted House 1 and House 2. Real estate experts and architects had deemed the front two houses most desirable due to their architectural sloped ceilings, including a double height family room in House 1.
Papamoa mums Janah & Rach were paired up with ‘Chalk and Cheese’ West Coast-born brothers Dylan & Keegan in House 3, while the young Aucklanders Tim & Arthur were paired in House 4 with Meg & Dan, seasoned renovators who together run a construction company. Realising teamwork was essential to win the desired house, Dylan and Keegan chose to help their teammates Janah & Rach by doing some shopping for them to ensure they didn’t get behind. That strategy paid off for their teammates at least, as while it was Meg & Dan’s botanical wallpaper, Resene Wallpaper Collection 5223-2, which captured the judge’s hearts, it was Janah & Rach’s and Dylan & Keegan’s combined scores which allowed the mums to have first pick of the houses. But it wasn’t an easy decision – not only will House 1 and House 2 be two rooms behind House 3 and House 4 but the two front houses are some of the most architecturally complex. Janah & Rach are the only team without a tradesperson, so their decision to choose House 1 without an onboard tradie may be a risky move.
We take a closer look at the four guest bedrooms this week:
Meg & Dan used a statement wallpaper Resene Wallpaper Collection 5223-2 which they paired with walls and the ceiling in Resene Black White.

Final score: 25.5
Meg & Dan proved they are the team to beat this week, winning the Game Changer challenge as well as the first room reveal. The pair had a rocky start to the week, with tradie changes and a shopping accident when they forgot to pick up their feature wallpaper. “It’s been a learning curve and a rollercoaster all mixed into one,” says Dan.
However, it all came together on room reveal day and the judges were mesmerised by their striking wallpaper, Resene Wallpaper Collection 5223-2 which impressed judge Lauren Mirabito so much she scored their room a 9.5/10. The husband and wife duo wrapped two of their walls in the feature wallpaper and used Resene SpaceCote to paint the sloping ceiling which features skylights. The side and back walls and trims were painted in Resene Zylone Sheen Low Sheen tinted in Resene Black White. “It’s a brave choice to go with a really intense, heavy, dark wallpaper in a relatively small room but with the volume of the space and the light coming through, it works,” said judge Chris Stevens.
Resene Wallpaper Collection 5223-2 also features on the inside of the wardrobe creating cohesion in the room. The walls, architrave and ceiling are painted in Resene Black White.
The judges commended their use of the same wallpaper inside the wardrobe which also included a makeup table, commenting that it was a great use of space and the Resene wallpaper tied the room together.
Dylan & Keegan’s tongue and groove feature wall is painted in Resene Ayers Rock which contrasts with the crisp Resene Alabaster on the ceiling and architraves and off-white Resene Eighth Truffle on the walls.
Dylan & Keegan’s Guest Bedroom
Final score: 23.5
‘Chalk and Cheese’ brothers Dylan & Keegan bring together the best of both worlds with Dylan’s architecture background and Keegan’s building skill set. The brothers went big and bold this week with a tongue and groove feature wall painted in on-trend terracotta Resene Ayers Rock paired with Resene Alabaster on the ceiling and architraves and Resene Eighth Truffle on the walls. The brothers had varied reviews. Ann-Louise said, “I just love the colour, I just think it’s got guts, it’s got style good on ‘em.” Lauren thought it might not be to everyone’s tastes but was a fabulous designer room that would look great in a magazine.
Dylan & Keegan’s wardrobe and trims are painted in Resene Alabaster and the side wall is Resene Eighth Truffle, a sharp contrast to the Resene Ayers Rock feature wall. The smoky glass mirrored doors on the wardrobe was another favourite of the judges.
The walls, ceiling and trims of Janah & Rach’s wall were all painted in Resene Barely There allowing the timber panelling to be the statement piece of the room. Finish interior timber in Resene Aquaclear Satin to protect the timber and make it easy to wipe clean.

Final score: 24.5
‘Fun mums’ from Papamoa, Janah & Rach, were hoping for the top score this week to be able to afford tradies for upcoming weeks as they are the only team without a tradesperson. However, it seems like they have nothing to worry about in the styling department with their choice of furnishings and Resene colours. Although Janah & Rach seemed behind earlier in the week, relying on Dylan & Keegan to do some shopping for them, they caught up on judging day. They impressed the judges with wooden panelling offset with walls, ceiling and trims painted in Resene Barely There. They added a touch of razzle dazzle in the form of Art Deco inspired brass features on the timber panelling and LED lighting..
“I love it, it’s very luxe, it’s very Art Deco. It’s brave but it’s not so brave that buyers who don’t love it won’t appreciate it,” said Lauren.
The judges loved the mixture of textures on the bedding including the blush velvet quilt from Città.
The judges also loved the extra storage above the wardrobe but noted that the mums had run out of time to paint the inside of the storage cavity.
Resene Barely There is used in the wall and cupboard area of Janah & Rach’s Guest Bedroom. Finish interior timber in Resene Aquaclear Satin to protect the timber and make it easy to wipe clean.
Tim & Arthur used Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Waiouru on their walls and trims and Resene White on their ceiling.
Tim & Arthur’s Guest Bedroom
Final score: 14.5
Tim & Arthur started out the week with a crash course in The Block NZ construction, learning about scotias and how to fit plasterboard. They narrowly missed a painting disaster when they discovered a four litre can of Resene SpaceCote paint had been knocked over the day before the room reveal. Luckily the Resene ColorShop came to the rescue with a replacement can delivered one minute before closing time. The judges weren’t sure that such a bold colour should have been used on all four walls, but they commended their use of the on-trend earthy green Resene Waiouru for its cosy, cocooning qualities. “I like the earthy tones in the space and it’s an interesting choice of colour with green,” said Chris.
The Resene Waiouru walls and trims show off the custom artwork and wooden venetians. The ceiling is Resene White.
For the ceilings, Tim & Arthur chose Resene White and Resene Double Black White for the wardrobe.
The Block NZ | Sunday 7pm, continuing Monday - Wednesday 7.30pm on Three and streaming from 12pm on ThreeNow.
