Three’s The Block NZ: Study or upstairs sitting room week

The teams from Three’s The Block NZ had a choice this week to either create a study or sitting room in their upstairs space. Bold Resene Gunmetal features in one team’s study, and soothing Resene Ravine in another.

It was another week packed full of adrenalin, with carpet and painting issues (Quinn & Ben’s carpet installing dilemma left the other teams awaiting the carpet installers in their homes). Teams were pushed for time, and it resulted in a final rush in their last hour before judging. In the end, it was a victorious win for Chloe & Ben, who have now raked in three weeks of consecutive wins.

We take a closer look at the four spaces created this week:

Chloe & Ben’s Living Space
Final score: 17.5/20

Chloe & Ben’s soothing living space upstairs scored them the win this week, with walls in Resene Half Sea Fog and trims and ceiling in Resene Quarter Pravda.

Chloe & Ben are on an impressive winning streak. The pair went for a neutral colour palette this week with walls in Resene Half Sea Fog and trims and ceiling in Resene Quarter Pravda. Judge Jason commented their design was a lovely way to use their upstairs hallway, a good family hangout space. He also liked their arch design in Resene Half Sea Fog, which offered a nice focal point in the room. The addition of an attic staircase was also impressive. The judges emphasised the importance of spaces to be together and apart in a home.

Stacy & Adam’s Study

Final score: 14.5/20

Stacy & Adam usedResene Gunmetal on the panelled study walls, Resene Quarter Bianca on the ceiling and Resene Sea Fog on opposite hallway walls.

Stacy & Adam went bold this week, creating a moody study space upstairs in their home with Resene Gunmetal. The look has a nautical twist with a life ring hung on one wall, and leather furnishings. The judges liked that the couple had been daring with their paint use and had gone for a dark and moody space but questioned the size of the study. Jason felt the desk was almost too big for one person and could have fitted two. He also questioned the space’s relationship to their other rooms, feeling it has been designed in a very different style.

Quinn & Ben’s Living Space

Final score: 10/20

Quinn & Ben’s zen upstairs living space with soft green Resene Peace as a feature and classic Resene Black White on opposite walls and the ceiling.

Quinn & Ben didn’t receive the feedback they were after this week. They created a peaceful upstairs living room space with soothing Resene Peace and Resene Black White, but the judges said they wanted to see more adventurous use of colour. Jason also felt there was a lot of visual clutter in the room, and wasn’t a fan of their plywood shelves, commenting they looked unfinished. Overall, the judges enjoyed the vibe of the room, but knocked points off for its finishing.

Maree & James’ Living Space

Final score: 7/20

Maree & James used Resene Ravine on their upstairs feature wall and Resene Half Bianca on the opposite walls and ceiling.

It’s the toughest score yet for Maree & James, who are gutted the judges aren’t impressed with their upstairs study. Judge Shelley says on first impression that the room feels peaceful and calm, and she likes their use of Resene Ravine on the back wall. She says the colour palette is inviting and warm, but there are obvious design issues. Jason is more brutal, calling the space “a hot mess”, and questioning why they had installed a laundry shoot when the space could have been utilised better.

Top tip: Bring out the depth in weathered colours with Resene SpaceCote Flat.  The matte finish will emphasise the depth and undertones in your colour and help to gently diffuse the light.
