Tim & Amanda’s ever evolving New Plymouth home
After Tim and Amanda Parker bought a two bedroom 1960s weatherboard home in New Plymouth, they spent six weeks renovating it before moving in. Like many families, six weeks wasn’t enough for things to be done and dusted – and that’s exactly how they wanted it.
Tim owns and operates his own building company, Tim Parker Construction, while Amanda currently works full-time as a stay-at-home mum. The two are always up for repainting and changing things up, and they’ve certainly kept themselves busy making their house into a home.
Since moving in, they’ve added on an extension that included a master bedroom, a walk-in wardrobe, an ensuite and an office – baby Jude was on the way and two bedrooms just wasn’t going to cut it.
Now, five-year-old son Joley and six-month-old Jude each have a space of their own that they only need to share with occasional roommates Winnie the bulldog, Dottie the staffy and Poppy the cat.
Amanda takes us through the design of her bright and inspiring home.
What inspired your Resene colour choices?
“I always have a look/theme going into designing a room, and colour plays a huge part in that. Colour is one of the first things I pick, then I can dress the room to suit.”
How did you decide on the overall look?
“We wanted to keep it modern looking, using fresh white tones as a base but it’s also important to have a bit of fun and I’m definitely not shy when it comes to adding a splash of colour as a feature wall. I love rattan/cane furniture and lots of greenery/plants and I love putting bold colours with soft colours I really thinks that makes a statement.”
What part of the renovation are you most happy with (so far)?
“I love Jude’s room! The room is so sunny and Resene Noosa just makes the space. We are also very happy with Resene Beethoven in the lounge, which we recently painted over from Resene Half Dust Storm as we were wanting to change things up. Everyone that comes over compliments the colour choice and says how much it warms the lounge.”
What advice do you have for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
“Be bold. A colour can really transform a space, and at the end of the day, it’s only paint – and it can always be repainted.”
What was the biggest decorating, renovating or building challenge for this project?
“Our biggest challenge was keeping the house liveable and weather tight whilst adding the extension as it came off the living area. We had to separate the areas when they were being worked on and was all about the timing and planning!”
What’s next on your to-do list?
“We are looking forward to transforming the outside of our home with Resene! We’ve yet to pick a colour, but it’ll be something like Resene White Pointer or Resene Sea Fog.”
What is your favourite Resene colour?
“I couldn’t pick a colour! There are too many beautiful colours to choose from and I will always use lots of colour in our home.”

The bottom half of the main wall in five-year-old Joley’s room is painted Resene Teal Blue while the rest of the walls are in Resene Quarter Concrete.
It’s easy to see why Jude’s room is Amanda’s favourite – the wall feature in the six-month-old’s sunny nursery is painted in Resene Noosa. The rest of the walls are in Resene Quarter Concrete and the trim and ceilings are in Resene Quarter Black White.
The feature wall in the Parker’s lounge looks perky in Resene Beethoven. The surrounding walls are in Resene Quarter Concrete while the ceiling, trim and architraves are in Resene Quarter Black White and Winnie the bulldog strikes a pose.
The feature wall in the home office defines the space in Resene Palm Leaf, while the trims, shelving and ceiling pop in Resene Quarter Black White. The other walls in the room are in Resene Quarter Concrete.
The walls, ceiling and trim of the master bedroom were kept neutral in Resene Quarter Black White, allowing the artwork to become the focal point of the space and set the palette for the bedding.
The walls of the brand new ensuite in Resene Quarter Robin Egg Blue play off the colours in the patterned floor tiles, creating a space that looks fresh, clean and brimming with character. The trim and ceiling are in Resene Quarter Black White.
