2 colourful kids’ crafts made with upcycled materials

Crafting doesn’t always have to mean scouring the nearest arts and crafts store for new materials. Often, the perfect supplies can be those that are on their way to the recycling bin.

Beachcombing is another great way to discover unique treasures that are just waiting to be brought back to life.

Alayna Flighty from Kiwi Families demonstrates how you and your kids can transform would-be trash into treasures with a little imagination and few Resene testpots.

Toilet Roll Unicorn Marionette

Younger kids will love this cardboard bright and colourful unicorn puppet. It’s the perfect way to experiment with colour.

You will need:

  • 2 toilet rolls
  • Thick glitter paper
  • Resene testpots in your choice of colours – Alayna used Resene Pretty in Pink and Resene FX Bedazzle metallic paint
  • An assortment of beads with fairly big holes
  • A piece of dowel for the control bar, or a twig from the garden
  • Tape
  • Cord – for the legs
  • A glue gun and glue
  • Wool in a range of colours
  • Buttons
  • Pin
  • Googly eyes
  • Toothpick
  • Strong or cotton for the marionette cords
