DIY shelf Christmas tree

05 Dec 2018

Make this easy vertical Christmas tree shelf. You can either paint it direct to the wall, or make it as a shaped board to hang or prop against the wall.

You will need:

Step 1: Mark out triangles on the wall with pencil, making the base of each of the 3 triangles slightly wider than the shelves. We added 5cm on each side of the triangle base, but used the shelf width to start the next triangle. Use a spirit level to make sure the base of the triangles are straight. We placed the shelves 18cm apart.

Step 2: Mask along the pencil lines.

Step 3: Paint the tree shape. Paint the shelves and brackets.

Step 4: Hang shelves towards the bottom of each triangle. Fix a star at the top and decorate the shelves with seasonal decorations.

Making the craft stick stars and snowflakes

To make the red stars on our tree, simply use different lengths of iceblock-style craft sticks, lay them in a star pattern, glue with a hot glue gun and paint in Resene Half Pohutukawa and Resene Red Herring.

Here’s how to make similar snowflake shapes to decorate your walls:

You will need:

  • Craft iceblock sticks in two lengths; 6 longer craft sticks and 24 shorter length
  • Ruler and pencil
  • Hot glue gun
  • Testpot brush
  • Resene testpots in your choice of colours. We used Resene Half Pohutukawa and Resene Red Herring

Step 1: Plan out your pattern. We used three patterns with two larger snowflakes and a smaller one. Mark the position of where to glue the shorter sticks on to the longer sticks. Glue two of the shorter sticks on to each side at about a 45 degree angle on each side. Repeat with the two other sticks. Repeat for all six of the longer sticks. Glue each of the snowflake ‘arms’ together in the centre. Two sets of sticks should line up across from each other to create the three straight lines.

Step 2: Paint in your chosen colour – we used Resene Half Pohutukawa and Resene Red Herring. One dry, arrange on the wall, using Blu Tack.
