15 Mar 2023

If your flowers are out of bloom, add some colour with these gorgeous DIY wire alliums. The bright violet of Resene Kingfisher Daisy will look great amongst your greenery, but you can opt for any pretty Resene colour of your choice, plus, these flowers will last all year round and won’t die on you!

What you need:

  • Chicken wire/bird netting
  • Wire cutters
  • Ball (such as a tennis ball)
  • Garden stakes
  • Wire, 0.7mm thick
  • Resene Quick Dry
  • Paintbrush
  • Resene Galvo-Prime
  • Resene testpots in colours of your choice. Fleur used Resene Green House and Resene Kingfisher Daisy.

Step 1: Start by using some wire cutters to cut out some circles from the chicken wire. Fleur’s circles are 40cm in diameter.

Step 2: Find a ball, such as a tennis ball or something slightly larger and squash the wire circle around it to form a ball shape. Fleur used a Christmas bauble. Remove the ball from the middle.

Step 3: Prime your garden stakes with one coat of Resene Quick Dry, followed by two coats of your chosen Resene colour. Fleur used Resene Green House.

Use some 0.7mm gauge wire to wrap the end of the wire ball on to the end of the garden stakes. You may find it helpful to cut out some of the bulk off the wire mesh to make it easier to attach to the stake.

Step 4: Next, paint some Resene Galvo-Prime on to the chicken wire.

Step 5: Once the primer is dry, paint on a coat of your chosen Resene colour. Fleur used Resene Kingfisher Daisy. Paint over the 0.7mm gauge wire with some more of your green shade, Fleur used Resene Green House.

Step 6: Wait until your wire flowers are dry. Stick them in the dirt amongst your greenery and enjoy.
