12 Feb 2025

Transform ordinary stones into whimsical garden gnomes with this fun and easy DIY project! Perfect for adding personality to your outdoor space, these painted rock gnomes are a quirky and charming way to brighten up your garden. Whether you're an experienced crafter or just looking for a playful weekend project, this step-by-step guide will help you bring these delightful garden guardians to life!

You will need:

  • Stones

  • Resene Quick Dry

  • Paintbrush, including a very thin craft paintbrush

  • Pencil

Step 1: For this project you need stones that are wide at the bottom and have a pointy top.

Step 2: Make sure the stones are clean and free of dust and dirt. Prime them with one coat of Resene Quick Dry. This will help your topcoat colours look their best.Once the primer is dry, paint each rock with two coats of your chosen base colour. Fleur used Resene Alamo. When the topcoat is dry, use a pencil to draw on each gnomes face.

Step 3: Paint the beard with two coats of your chosen white – Fleur used Resene Half Parchment. Paint the hats in your chosen colours – Fleur went with Resene Teal Blue, Resene Saratoga, Resene Lonestar, Resene Merlot, Resene Cumin and Resene Rusty Nail

Step 4: Paint on the eyes in your chosen colours. Fleur went for a black and white with Resene Rice Cake and Resene Black

Step 5: Finish by painting around all the features with a thin line of a darker shade. Fleur used Resene Rebel for this.

Arrange your gnome rock family in your garden.  Have fun with the kids and change where the gnomes are for a fun game of ‘colourful gnome’ hunting.
