How to make your own gumboot rack
07 Mar 2025
Keep your floors clean and always know where your gumboots are using this bright colour-coded boot stand. It works perfectly with the colours of Resene gumboots or personalise your own gumboots with Resene testpots to suit the colours you choose on your boot stand.
You will need
· Pine decking 90mm (w) x 32mm (h) x 1600mm (l)
· 5 x 900mm lengths of 28mm pine doweling (will be cut in half to 450mm). If you have four pairs of gumboots then you will only need 4 lengths of doweling.
· Tape measure
· Mitre box and saw
· 28mm Forstner drill bit
· Electric drill
· PVA glue
· Sander or sandpaper
· Washi tape
· Resene Woodsman Whitewash
· Resene Quick Dry undercoat
· Resene paint in your chosen colours. We used Resene Glamour Puss, Resene Aqua, Resene Seachange and Resene Clover.
Step 1
Cut two lengths of 300mm pine decking and two of 500mm on an angle of 45 degrees in a mitre box. You should have two long and two short pieces to make the base shape for the stand.
Use PVA glue to join the four pieces squarely together, hold in place with washi tape while they dry.
Step 2
Cut each piece of 28x900 mm doweling in half to create 10 equal lengths. Round off one end of each piece with a sander or sandpaper. Wipe off the sanding dust.
Use a 28mm Forstner wheel bit to make five holes on each long side of the base. They should be about 85mm apart.
Step 3
Glue the doweling in the holes with PVA glue.
Step 4
Give it a light sand and wipe away the sanding dust with a damp cloth.
Using washi tape, tape around the base of each piece of doweling and apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry undercoat. Allow to dry before applying two coats of your chosen Resene colours. We used Resene Glamour Puss, Resene Aqua, Resene Seachange and Resene Clover.
Top tip: You can also paint the doweling prior to assembling if this is easier for you.
Step 5
Apply Resene Woodsman Whitewash to the base.
Top tips:
· Vary the length of your gumboot stand depending on how many gumboots you need to be able to store.
· For a more natural look you can finish your gumboot stand in Resene Waterborne Woodsman wood stain instead of a painted finish. If you do need to clean your gumboot stand, the painted finish will be easiest to clean.
· If you’re using testpots for the painting and would like a higher sheen level, finish the painted areas in Resene Concrete Clear gloss. The higher the gloss level the easier it will be to keep clean. A lower sheen level will help to hide imperfections.
