How to create a rope basket

03 May 2018

Love the recent rope basket trend and want to learn how to create your own? This DIY project using Resene testpots will show you how easy it really is.

Rope baskets are great because they are so versatile - smaller baskets are perfect to fill with pot plants or knitting on the go, or go bigger with a basket for your pets to enjoy.

Leigh Stockton shows us how.

You will need:

  • Resene testpots in Resene Turkish Delight, Resene Freelance and Resene Good As Gold
  • Resene testpot brushes
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Braided rope – one metre will make a small basket

Step one. To create the scattered colour effect, fold the rope together and paint in the three different colours. Leave to dry.

Step two. Using the hot glue gun, glue the rope and coil to create a base. The bigger the base, the bigger the basket.

Step three. Now start coiling upwards. If you need help in forming the shape, use a cylindrical mould such as a pot plant or another basket. Be careful the glue doesn’t stick to the mould, unless you want to keep the mould inside.

Step four. Once finished, fold the end into a little handle or simply cut and tuck into the basket.
