Rock 'em, sock 'em: DIY noughts and crosses
22 Jun 2023
Play some ‘stone cold’ tic tac toe with the family by making your very own noughts and crosses set. This handy set has its own bag so it can be easily taken away camping or up to the bach in the holidays. Get creative and use your favourite Resene paint colours to make them unique!
You will need:
- 10 stones
- Paintbrush
- Fabric – or use the fabric from an old fabric bag that duvets or sheets come in
- Cord
- Scissors
- Cotton thread
- Sewing machine
- Resene testpots in paint colours of your choice. Fleur used Resene Japonica, Resene Teal Blue, Resene Pirate Gold, Resene Planter and Resene Black.
Step 1: Start by painting five of your stones in one of your chosen Resene paint colours, and the other five in another colour. Fleur used Resene Japonica for five and Resene Teal Blue for the other five.
Step 2: Once the base colour is dry, paint on your circles and crosses using your other chosen Resene paint colours. Fleur painted Resene Planter onto the Resene Japonica stones, and Resene Pirate Gold onto the Resene Teal Blue stones.
Step 3: Cut out a piece of fabric big enough to make a bag for the stones (Fleur’s fabric was 22cm x 30cm). Use a thin craft paintbrush to paint a grid on the fabric with Resene Black or another Resene paint colour of your choice.
Step 4: To make the bag, turn a hem over on the long side of the fabric to make a channel for the cord. Fold the fabric over with the right sides facing and sew the remaining two sides together. Turn the bag the right way out, insert a length of cord into the hem/channel made earlier, and finish by tying the end of the cord in a knot. Happy playing!
Note: if you don’t have a sewing machine you can sew it by hand or purchase a small bag and paint your grid on.
