28 Jan 2021
Transform a plain concrete planter into an antique style planter using Resene FX Faux Rust Effect. This product gives surfaces the look of rusted steel with an easy application. Once the Resene Faux Rust Effect is applied the urn will continue to weather and age over time, just like real rusty metal.
You will need:
- Concrete urn
- Medium grit sandpaper
- Cloth/rag
- Resene Quick Dry
- Paintbrush
- Paint stirrer
- Resene FX Faux Rust Effect (base coat and activator)
- Plastic container
- Rubber gloves
- Spray bottle and water
- Cardboard
Step 1 This second hand concrete and was already painted white when it was purchased Because Fleur knew what type of paint it was, she gave it a sand with a medium grit sandpaper, wiped it down with a soft dry cloth, and gave it a coat of Resene Quick Dry.
Step 2 Give the can of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect a good stir. As it’s thick use a strong paint stirrer. Use a paintbrush to paint it on to the urn. Don’t worry about getting a perfect finish – the more texture your paint application has, the better the final result. Allow at least four hours to dry. If you were using a normal terracotta pot, clean then apply Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer. Alloy to dry.
Step 3 Paint on a second coat of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect. After an hour, or when it is still slightly tacky, use a clean paintbrush to paint on the Resene FX Faux Rust Effect Activator. Pour the Activator into a clean plastic container and brush it on. Make sure you are wearing rubber gloves and to have the urn standing on cardboard to collect any drips as the product can stain.
Step 4 Allow the urn to dry for 12 hours. After 12 hours, use a spray bottle and clean water to spray all over the urn. This will help to produce a deeper rust effect.
Once dry, fill your urn with good quality potting mix and a selection of your favourite plants. The home colour in the background is Resene Triple Ash withtrim in Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream.
