Trending: terracotta heads indoors
It's not just the temperature that's hotting up. Terracotta is the shade of the moment, in all its burnt, reddy goodness. Using Resene Desperado as a starting point (painted on the hall table) we've brought terracotta indoors with this natural living-inspired scheme.
The colour palette is a selection of desert tones... the dusty colours of the Australian outback come to mind. Instead of being highly saturated, they're a bit more complex and duskier than before. Colours that naturally occur in nature, and are easy on the eye.
Hot tones are cooled down by neutral accents of black, white and concrete for a well-balanced, liveable scheme. If you're looking for livelier colours that still keep it contemporary, try accents of dry olives like Resene Half Evolution and swampy greens like Resene Ruck N Maul.
Terracotta may look quite 'bricky' as a full wall colour in a residential interior.Think of it more as an accent... it's perfect for stair banisters, door frames, and furniture like we've used here. This living room is a great example of making terracotta work for the indoors.
Why it works
- It's all about dusky and burnt tones. Resene Desperado (on the sideboard), Resene Rumour Has It and Resene Entourage (on the peg stools) really hit the mark.
- Accessories that give an understated nod to the outdoors are organic to this colour scheme. Think flora prints, bits of greenery and seashells as ornaments.
- We love the balance of the vertical lines, i.e. the hanging pendant lights, tall vases and far-reaching twigs, with the horizontally long hall table, jute rug and wide retro chair.
- The floor painted in creamy Resene Double Biscotti keeps it light and fresh.
- Check out that texture. From the wallpapered walls in Resene Anaglypta 2011 (RD3360, painted in Resene Albescent White) to a knobbly jute rug, it's texture heaven.
