Wow, wow, wow! This 1893 villa’s Victorian-inspired colour palette is a must-see
“My favourite room is unquestionably the home office. This is the brightest, warmest space in the house, and I have painted the entire room in Resene Dark Slate. This space exudes calm and fills me with happiness, working in here is an absolute delight.” Trims and ceiling in Resene Black White.
Rachel’s home is rich in history, having long peered out towards Auckland’s harbour on Buchanan Street. One of Devonport’s earliest villas, the iconic home’s interior has just received a head-to-toe makeover in Resene paints, including Resene Bounty, Resene Dark Slate, and Resene Loblolly. “The Victorian era is deeply embedded in this home both in spirit and within the character features, so that’s where I began,” Rachel says.

The 100-year-old Nelson villa restored by renovation masters, Alice and Caleb
The family in front of this Richmond home, the deck was built by Caleb. The villa is fresh in Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen tinted to Resene Umber White on the weatherboards and pergola, windows and door trims in Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene All Black. They’ve since moved out of the home and are in the middle of their next renovating adventure in Auckland.
Alice and Caleb are certainly no strangers to a challenging DIY project – sledgehammers, paint brushes and power tools have been at the ready for the last decade. The couple have renovated ten houses together across the country, including the winning home on The Block NZ in 2013. Their latest South Island project is a Nelson villa. Clever use of Resene paints (like Resene Green Meets Blue) and wallpapers from the Resene Wallpaper Collection have kept the home’s heritage style while giving it a modern edge.

Cosy wooden Wanaka home’s makeover in Resene neutrals inspired by the snowy landscape
The living/dining features Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Concrete painted on walls with a combination of light and dark kitchen joinery alongside a stonework wall.
Enveloped by the mountains and sitting lakeside in Wanaka, Maggie and Lawrence’s home needed a colour palette to match their picturesque setting. Resene Foggy Grey and Resene Half Periglacial Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection complement the cosiness and warmth of their interior timbers. With the views of Lake Wanaka and surrounding mountains from the living, dining and master bedroom, the interior scheme needed to be cosy, but not detract from the view.” Nina says.

Whether you choose one of the neutrals with a hint of blue or a full-on rich navy, there’s plenty to choose from in the Resene palette. Inside a whimsical Nelson ‘Gingerbread House’ from the 1860s
“Painting the whole house was a massive undertaking and we knew we had to engage professionals. It made it so much easier to work in with the builders who were replacing boards at the same time and sharing scaffolding,” Gemma says. Cheerful Resene St Kilda is painted on the weatherboards, Resene Alabaster on the fence and trims and Resene Colour Me Pink on the doors and mailbox.
Gemma and Jeremy’s wee home in Nelson is packed with character – and characters. Flamingoes, parrots and flowers from the Resene Wallpaper Collection rub shoulders with Crown Lynn swans, vintage ducks, polar bears and Kit-Cat Klocks (not to mention Gemma and Jeremy’s real life cat Alfie) in the playful home first built in the 1860s. “The style is gothic, although tourists and passers-by often refer to it as a gingerbread house,” says Gemma.

1950s ex-rental transformed into chic family home with barely there neutrals
“The exterior originally had dark blue trims, which in our super sunny city, meant peeling, blistering and bubbling, so I repainted the exterior trims in Resene Alabaster to protect them for as long as possible.” Weatherboards in Resene Quarter Periglacial Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection with window trims and soffits in Resene Alabaster.
When Sarah moved into her Tauranga ex-rental home, it was a little on the neglected side. Despite its worn carpets and some interesting colour choices (one room a frightening deep purple with a silver ceiling), interior designer Sarah could see its potential. “Before my children and I moved in I stripped all the carpets out and had the floor polished. What a difference! From there I have chipped away at the house for seven years.”

Shane and Ashley’s Leeston home is a picture of calm – however if the dreamy Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream and Resene Clouded Blue walls could talk, they would tell you about the hours of hard work and 3am finishes that went into their home’s construction. A transitional villa in colours of the rainbow is a real showstopper
This cheerful front door is painted in Resene Jalapeno. The living room sings in vibrant teal Resene Retreat. All trims and ceilings are in Resene Quarter Merino, while the bedroom is in Resene Oxygen. All interiors are painted in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.
“Why are people so afraid of colour?” Fiona wonders. Fiona has no such qualms and has embraced the Resene rainbow for her dazzling home of many colours. She admits the riot of colours on the exterior – Resene Troubadour on the weatherboards Resene Deep Koamaru on the fence and Resene Jalapeno on the gate – polarises people. Over the years there’s been plenty of reaction, from the neighbour who dropped a note in the letterbox saying the colours were disgraceful, to the kids on the walking school bus who ask to detour past the purple house. For Fiona, colour is positivity. “I love coming home to colour, it energises me,” she says.
